HISTORY OF MOONSTONE
The history of moonstone is very important when one knows the attraction and fascination of the moon for ancestors. Indeed, they saw great resemblance of moonstone to moonlight. During antiquity, moonstone was an object of divination and was considered the stone of goddesses. To receive heavenly foresight, some men wore women’s costumes while putting the stone in their mouths.
Indian and Roman civilisations thought that moonstone was created by the moon’s white or silver rays of light. Even today, this stone is sacred in India. According to the beliefs of the Roman Empire, moonstone changed the astral phases. The Romans even thought that the Roman moon goddess Diane could be visible on this stone. This stone is also known for its beliefs related to love. It was known to influence feelings of love.
Discovered in 1801 by Jean-Claude Delamétherie, moonstone’s mysteries and composition were uncovered at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1970, Florida adopted moonstone as the official state gem, paying tribute to the first step on the moon in 1969.
Today, moonstone is widely used for crafting cabochons but also jewels such as necklaces, bracelets, pendants, etc. This beautiful stone is commonly worn, whether for its aesthetics or its virtues.
ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF MOONSTONE
The Hindi etymology of moonstone comes from the word ‘kanta’ meaning ‘loved’ and ‘sanskrit chandra’ meaning ‘moon’. Together the expressions mean ‘loved by the moon’ directly referencing its mythical origin. Its name also alludes to moonlight, in its splendour and beauty. This stone belongs to the feldspar group.
Moonstone is colourless but can be distinguished by its reflections that can range from white to blue, or occasionally yellow. The reflections are primarily due to moonstone’s crystalline structure. It features an optical effect: Adularescence: a milky, blueish lustre or glow which appears below the surface of the gem when viewing at different angles.
