CITRINE STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHO THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES
HISTORY OF CITRINE STONE
Known since 500 BC, citrine stone has been appreciated since Greek antiquity. At that time, citrine was considered a lucky charm, or at least was used to combat evil eye and protect oneself from reptiles. Meanwhile, the Roman Empire used it regularly to craft engraved stones with reliefs such as citrine pendants and cabochons.
The most well-known citrine stone deposits to this date are located in the Antananarivo province in Madagascar. Many other deposits exist in Germany, Brazil, Spain, Austria, The United States and the Czech Republic. However, it is important to be selective as citrine stone is very rare and fake stones sometimes appear on the market. These can be amethysts that, upon exceeding 500 °C in temperature, turn from violet to yellow.
ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF CITRINE STONE
Citrine stone belongs to the quartz family and is composed of iron and silicon oxide. Occasionally, it can be found under the name ‘Yellow Hyalin Quartz’. Its small amount of iron oxide gives it its yellow colour. Its name is derived from the Latin “citrina”, meaning lemon, alluding to its yellow colour. Its hardness is index 7 on the Mohs scale, which is relatively rare for a natural stone.
