HISTORY OF ROSE QUARTZ STONE

Rose quartz stone holds an intimate relationship with love and with the heart. During the Bronze Age, Middle Eastern civilisations advocated the goddess of fertility, war and love Asherah, with rose quartz. These rites and offerings continued until antiquity. Many civilisations also used it, whether it be Carthaginians, Etruscans, Greeks, Hebrews, Hurrians, Mesopotamians, Phoenicians, Romans or Sumerians.

According to Greek mythology, rose quartz stone was at created at the time of Aphrodite. When her Adonis was out hunting, he was attacked by a boar that was in fact Ares, a lover of Aphrodite. Aphrodite would then have intervened in the bushes, except they were filled with brambles. Aphrodite then found her lover Adonis dead. From his blood emerged rose quartz stone. As such, the Greek people frequently used this stone to worship the goddess of beauty and love, Aphrodite. Another legend states that Eros brought rose quartz to earth to represent its beauty, and that this stone was made to replace human hatred and anger with love.

These beliefs also existed in ancient Rome. Rose quartz was imported from two primary deposits: India and Sri Lanka. Today, rose quartz stone is used in various fields, such as litho therapy, industry, watchmaking and jewellery. Many jewels are made of rose quartz, such as necklaces, bracelets etc. In litho therapy, rose quartz pendants are used to work directly at the plexus.

ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF ROSE QUARTZ STONE

From the word ‘quaterz’ meaning ‘bad ore,’ rose quartz stone held this name until the 16th century. Some hypotheses also refer to its name in reference to the German term ‘gewärz’ meaning ‘germ’ and ‘growth’. It is not uncommon to see pink quartz also called: conite, azetulite, dragonite, lodolite, konolite, azeztulite.

A mineral species in its own right, quartz belongs to the silicate group. It is primarily composed of silicon dioxide. Like other quartz, rose quartz stone is found in large crystals that are both pink and translucent. Its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale and it is often found twinned, that is, an intergrowth of two separate crystals. Rose quartz crystallises between 573 °C and 870 °C.
