LAPIS LAZULI STONE: ITS HISTORY, ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION, AND ITS LITHO THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES
HISTORY OF LAPIS LAZULI STONE
Even in prehistoric times, lapis lazuli stone was used for adornments but also jewellery. Among its symbolism, lapis lazuli stone represents health, nobility, luck, elegance and purity. For these reasons, lapis lazuli is considered a semi-precious stone and has existed for more than 6000 years, since the dawn of man.
3000 years before Christ, Egyptian pharaohs used lapis lazuli stone to make amulets (in the shape of eyes, etc.) as well as for symbolic objects such as scarabs. Pharaohs and royalty adorned funeral masks and other symbols of wealth such as jewellery, and pendants with lapis lazuli.
The Romans, on the other hand, used lapis lazuli as an aphrodisiac. However, trading lapis lazuli was met with great difficulty as transport costs were expensive given that the stone had to be exported from overseas where the first deposits were found. At that time, gold was cheaper than lapis lazuli stone which explains why it is found on numerous kinds of jewellery, such as bracelets.
Later, in the Middle Ages, lapis lazuli stone powder was used for dying fabrics and painting. At that time, lapis lazuli was considered a protective stone, reducing fear, envy, and preventing mistakes. Physically, its specialty is to protect the body.
ORIGIN AND COMPOSITION OF LAPIS LAZULI STONE
The name ‘lapis lazuli’ comes from two separate origins. Initially of Latin origin as ‘lapis’ means stone, it also is of Arabic origin as ‘azul’ designates blue. Lapis lazuli therefore means blue stone. Lapis lazuli stone belongs to the aluminium and sodium sulphur silicates group. Its dominant colour is azure blue, but it is also possible to find it in blue-green and purple varieties. On the Mohs scale, its hardness varies between 5 and 6. Its density rests between 2.5 and 3.
The first deposits were found more than 6000 years ago in Afghanistan. Today, the primary deposits of lapis lazuli stone are located in Afghanistan, the United States, Canada, Chile, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Russia.
Lapis lazuli stone is Chile’s national stone and is world-renowned.
